Lifeguards
Our lifeguards are responsible for patron and facility safety, including in-water rescues, providing first aid, and enforcing facility rules. Lifeguards are also responsible for providing services to Fitness & Recreation members such as customer service, knowledge of program schedules, and facility amenities. Lifeguards are expected to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays.
Qualifications
We require a current and valid lifeguard and CPR/AED certification from the American Red Cross. A Title 22 Certification must be obtained within the first year of employment.

Swim Instructors
The Swimming Instructor works under direct supervision of the Aquatics Manager and is responsible for carrying out the day-to-day operations of the Aquatics unit, which includes customer service, creating and following lesson plans, and providing quality instruction to all program participants (both youth and adult).
Key Responsibilities
- Provide safe and thorough swim instruction of all aquatic classes.
- Develop comprehensive lesson plans for swimming classes in both group and private formats.
- Instructors are responsible for finding qualified substitutes at least 48 hours prior to their shift.
- Mentor new staff and volunteers.
- Maintain communication with supervisor and staff in an open and timely manner.
Qualifications
American Red Cross First Aid and CPR/AED for Infants, Youth and Adults certification; First Aide/Title 22 Component preferred

Water Exercise Instructors
The Water Exercise Instructor works under direct supervision of the Aquatics Manager and is responsible for carrying out the day-to-day operations of the Aquatics unit, which includes customer service and conducting classes that comply with the standards of the certification held, as well as UCSFʼs mission and instructing philosophy.
Key Responsibilities
- Teach every class scheduled through the entire session.
- Prepare a workout based on the needs and the ability of participates and provide a visual of adaptations.
- Start and end classes on time.
- Provide a professional and friendly workout environment
- Be responsible for the safety of students and class supervision.
- Follow Fitness and Recreation policies and class capacity guidelines
- Responsible for putting equipment away.
- Maintain communication with supervisor and staff in an open and timely manner.
Qualifications
- AEA, YMCA, or other professional certifications that pertain to water exercise and fitness (Required)
- American Red Cross First Aid and CPR/AED for Infants, Youth and Adults certification
Masters Coaches
The Bay Masters swim team is a 150+ adult swim team located on the UCSF Mission Bay campus. We provide a very fun and supportive atmosphere for swimmers of all ages. We design workouts to challenge swimmers of all levels and encourage interested swimmers to compete in swim meets and open water races. Assistant coaches are talented individuals who contribute to our continued excellence at the masters swimming level. Swimmer backgrounds range from open water and competitive swimmers to people who just want to stay in shape and become better swimmers. Assistant coaches create a safe, fun, and encouraging environment while providing workouts and feedback to all swimmers in support of their goals.
Qualifications
Required: Current certification in CPR/AED and First Aid. Possess a passion for the sport of swimming and working with swimmers. Previous experience working with coached swim teams and adult swimmers (preferred).
Group Fitness
Group X Instructors
Instructors inspire and motivate members through teaching group fitness classes. Develop class curriculum and assist with fitness promotions, maintain administrative records. Attend staff meetings and in-house trainings as required. Contribute to an annual class assessment and personal performance evaluation. Remain up to date with industry standards.

Recreational Sports
Recreational Sports offer a wide range of activities such as clinics, leagues, and drop-in sports to meet our customers’ recreational needs. Sports that take place in our facilities include basketball, futsal (indoor soccer), volleyball, dodgeball, squash, and racquetball.

Member Services
Membership Coordinators
The membership unit serves 14,000 members and provides financial support to the department. The Membership Coordinator works under direct supervision of the Member Services Supervisor and is responsible for carrying out the day-to-day operations including exceptional customer service and care, sales, retention, database management, billing assistance, clerical duties, promotions, and special events.

Service Desk Clerks
Our Service Desk Clerks are at the heart of our day-to-day operations and customer service. Duties include sales, financial reconciliations, service desk reception, clerical duties, housekeeping (e.g. laundry duties, towel folding, machine cleaning, etc.), following emergency procedures, helping with marketing promotions, and special events.
