American Red Cross Training
The lifeguard training class provides entry-level participants the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatics emergencies and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until EMS personnel take over.
Candidates must:
- Minimum age: 15 years old to participate in the Lifeguard Course
- Complete Lifeguard Training (Shallow Water)
Complete two prerequisite swim evaluations:
Prerequisite 1: Complete swim-tread-swim sequence without rest
- Jump into water fully submerged, resurface then begin to swim 150 yards (either use front crawl, breaststroke, or combination)
- Upon arrival to the wall, go straight into a 2-minute tread (using only legs)
- Swim 50 yards (either use front crawl, breaststroke, or combination)
Prerequisite 2: Complete a timed event within 50 seconds (shallow water)
- Starting in the water, swim 20 yards (Face may be in or out of the water. No swim goggles are allowed)
- Surface dive (feet-first or head-first) to a depth of 4 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object
- Return to the surface and swim 20 yards back to the starting point on your back, while holding the object at the surface with both hands and keeping face out or near surface of the water.
- At the wall, place 10-pound object onto the pool deck
- Exit the water without using a ladder or steps
Lifeguard Course Length:
- Instructor-Led: 27 hours, 25 minutes
- Blended Learning: About 6 hours of eLearning* (due before 1st day of course) and 21 hours, 30 minutes in-person
*eLearning must be completed to move forward into Lifeguard Course
Instructor:
Certified Lifeguard Instructor or instructor trainers
Certification Requirements:
- Pass all prerequisites
- Attended the entirety of all classes
- Demonstrate all required skills and activities
- Demonstrate final skills scenarios
- Correctly answered 80% of questions in the final written exam (Failure to meet course prerequisites, attend all classes, demonstrate competency in skills will result in forfeiture of class fees and certification will not be granted.)
Certification Issued & Validity:
American Red Cross certification for Shallow Water Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED is valid for 2 years
