UCSF Divisions and Departments are developing their own unique lactation accommodation guidelines, coinciding with the UCSF Lactation Accommodation Program and UC Lactation Accommodation Policies. Leaders and managers from each group work together to address unique scheduling needs and resources to support their employee's lactation break times.
How can my Division/Department create a guideline?
If your Division/Department is interested in developing a lactation accommodation guideline, please download the template in the box folder, and notify Caroline Wick, IBCLC Caroline.Wick@ucsf.edu. Caroline and other Division/Department leaders can help!
Which UCSF Divisions/Departments have their own guidelines?
What is the benefit?
Employees and scheduling managers can find it challenging when adjusting to new lactation breaks in the schedule. Employees/trainees/students have policy protected lactation breaks, and need to maintain their milk supply by taking pump breaks when their body needs. Making lactation accommodation guidelines with your specific group will help your team develop a plan that supports the pumping employee while meeting Division/Department demands.
I think for our division, which has such a high number of childbearing leaves, benefits from having lactation accommodation guidelines, because it helps normalize the experience for faculty. This way, rather than having faculty return to work trying to figure it out on their own, giving them this guidance just makes it part of the process. And as a new parent, having just one less thing to do is huge! - Annie Droste, Division of Hospital Medicine
