Program Information
Keeping people, property, and critical operations safe is our mission. The UCSF Fire & Life Safety Program is responsible for the management and oversight of fire protection and life safety systems across UCSF's main campuses and many affiliated off-site locations. Our responsibilities include limited planning, installation, and modification, as well as the inspection, testing, maintenance (ITM), operation, and repair of fire and life safety systems to help ensure the safety of patients, staff, students, visitors, and research facilities.
The program manages a wide range of fire protection and life safety systems, including Fire Alarm Systems, Automatic Fire Sprinkler Systems, Fire Doors, Fire Extinguishers, In-building Emergency Responder Communications Enhancement Systems (ERCES/ERRCS), and Area of Refuge Two-Way Communication Systems (ECS).
Our team ensures these systems are maintained in accordance with applicable National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards, federal, state, and local regulations, accreditation requirements established by The Joint Commission (TJC), and other applicable authorities having jurisdiction. While many inspection, testing, maintenance, and repair activities are performed by UCSF Fire & Life Safety personnel, specialized services are also provided by qualified contractors under the direction and oversight of the Fire & Life Safety Program to help ensure systems remain reliable, code-compliant, and properly documented.
