Commuter benefits help you pay for your commute to and from work using pre-tax dollars, which saves you money on your taxes each year.
You can use commuter benefits for transit (Muni, BART, Caltrain, ferry), rideshare (carpool or vanpool), and parking expenses.
On average, employees save $700 each year, or more when they set aside up to $325 (effective 1/1/2025) a month, the current limit set by the IRS. Edenred Commuter Benefit Solutions administers the UCSF Commuter Benefits program and provides participants a debit MasterCard to pay for commute expenses using pre-tax dollars.
NOTE: According to IRS Regulations, UCSF is not allowed to refund the balance of the card to cash. We recommend monitoring your usage to avoid accumulating a large balance.
“According to Section 1.132-9, Q&A 14(d), IRS regulations specify that amounts set aside under a compensation reduction agreement are not refundable other than by payment of another qualified transportation fringe under the employer’s plan.”

How to Pay for UCSF Parking
If your monthly parking fee is $332, you can contribute $332 per month to pay for parking with your pre-paid Mastercard from Edenred. However, only $325 of your $332 parking expense will be paid with pre-tax dollars, and the remainder will be paid after tax.
Requests to update your monthly contribution must be received by Edenred by the 23rd of the month, about 5 weeks prior to the date your change will be made effective.
