Starting January 1, 2024, UCSF has been selected as one of ten pilot employers in the Clipper BayPass Pilot Program. Through this program, UCSF will provide a small pilot group of eligible pilot participant employees with a no-cost Clipper BayPass. The pilot project is designed to study the benefits of a transit pass that provides access to most transit services in the Bay Area. The BayPass will be linked to the employee’s Clipper card and provides unlimited travel on any service that uses Clipper (except historic San Francisco Cable Cars, parking BayWheels and BikeLink). The pass will be available January 1, 2025 – December 31, 2025.
The Clipper BayPass is not limited to commuting. Eligible pilot participants may use their Clipper BayPass for any type of public transportation trip such as recreation, visiting friends and family, shopping, and more. Transit is a reliable and affordable alternative transportation option that will reduce single occupancy vehicle trips to our campuses. UCSF embraces the City’s “transit first” policy and strives to expand access to transit options. Our emphasis on cleaner and sustainable transportation is consistent with UCSF and UC Office of the President decarbonization goals and sustainability initiatives. Utilizing this pilot program will help UCSF plan for a potential future transit program open to a broader group.
Eligibility
Only a select number of Bay Area employers were selected to participate in this new employee-based pilot program. During the initial phases of the pilot, UCSF is piloting the BayPass with a limited group of employees. The employees participating in the pilot program represent a cross-section of UCSF employees including all UAW-represented bargaining unit employees based upon a negotiated contractual commitment and a group of non-represented Campus and Health employees. We wanted to ensure a good cross section of employees to collect data to inform future transit offerings. Employees who are newly eligible for the 2025 BayPass will be contacted via email by early December, 2024.
Cost
For eligible employees in the pilot program, UCSF will cover the cost of the BayPass during the 2024 and 2025 pilot periods. In the future, the program may require an employee co-payment.
