The Zero Waste Dashboard includes waste information for UCSF owned buildings in the West Bay. We are working towards 3 zero waste goals: 1) Achieve 50% diversion by 2025. 2) Achieve 25 lbs of generated waste per adjusted patient day by 2025. 3) Achieve 20 lbs of generated waste per adjusted patient day by 2030.
UCSF Health has implemented many zero waste strategies to meet our goals. All bins have been standardized based on color and have corresponding signage labeling what goes where. Waste sustainability trainings are provided for the medical center and ACC units, and several outreach events are hosted throughout the year to spread awareness. Monthly waste audits of bins are completed and the data collected is used to address waste stream contamination issues. All public facing restrooms have compost bins and signage, increasing our diversion of paper towels from the landfill. E-waste collection events help to prevent toxins from polluting the environment when e-waste ends up in the landfill. Instead, the collected e-waste is recycled by a trusted vendor. The medical supply donations program helps prevent excess medical supplies from being sent to the landfill by partnering with to humanitarian aid organizations to donate the supplies to local clinics in need. UCSF Health has also been expanding the number of single use devices that are collected, sterilized, and reprocessed to be used again.
