Governances and Committees for Sustainability and Climate Action
UCSF’s climate and sustainability committees are led by executive leadership and cross-campus collaboration. Through a coordinated network of committees and workgroups, UCSF advances its climate commitments and drives campus-wide planning and action in alignment with the UC Sustainable Practices Policy. These groups provide strategic oversight, policy direction, and implementation pathways that guide UCSF towards goals related to green buildings, zero waste, renewable and efficient energy, transportation, and supply chain as well as a 90% reduction in operational carbon emissions by 2045
UCSF Advisory Committee on Sustainability (UACS)
The charge of the committee is to advise on strategies for UCSF’s role as an international leader in health and sustainability. This is accomplished by supporting implementation of UC Sustainable Practices Policy and UCSF related policy and standards, incorporating sustainability in UCSF operations and administration, and advocating for sustainability topics in academic curriculum/practice. UACS membership consists of representatives from across the UCSF community including the four schools, health system, and campus operations and administration.

UCSF Fossil Free Governance Committee (FFGC)
The Fossil Free Governance Committee provides executive oversight for UCSF’s energy and utility systems, guiding the transition to fossil-free operations in alignment with UC’s goal of reducing carbon emissions by 90% by 2045. The committee ensures the reliability and resilience of UCSF’s clinical, research, and educational operations by overseeing utilities with greenhouse gas emissions—including electricity, natural gas, other fuels, and water and sewage systems linked to energy use. Bringing together leaders and stakeholders from UCSF Health and Campus, FFGC reviews and approves long-term infrastructure plans, major utility investments, thermal plant transitions, and clean energy strategies to maintain operational continuity while advancing toward a fossil-free future.

Sustainability Stakeholder Committee (SSC)
The SSC serves as a coordinating body of UCSF stakeholders responsible for sustainability implementation across numerous departments at UCSF Campus and Health. The committee brings together representatives from key operational and programmatic areas — including energy, water, waste, procurement, transportation, EH&S, food systems, and toxics reduction — to activate and implement the UC Sustainable Practices Policy and progress toward UCSF’s sustainability and climate action goals.
SSC participation is open to staff, faculty, and students who wish to contribute to topic-specific strategies and initiatives. Workgroups may convene outside of SSC meetings as needed to advance implementation and will share progress through SSC meetings to promote collaboration and visibility.
To improve coordination and strengthen engagement, the SSC has consolidated its historical workgroups. Currently, two main focus workgroups support priority policy areas:
- Climate Action Plan Work Group: Provides subject matter expertise and guidance to develop UCSF’s Climate Action Plan, advancing strategies to achieve a 90% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2045.
- Water Stewardship Work Group: Supports UCSF’s water conservation and efficiency goals by identifying opportunities to reduce consumption, improve operations, and align with UC policy requirements.
The SSC is co-chaired by representatives from UCSF Health and Campus Operations and meets on a bi-monthly cadence and supported by health and campus sustainability officers. The SSC is sponsored by the UCSF CSO and the UCSF sustainability technical director.
