UCSF is committed to achieving decarbonization by 90% by 2045. Please help us reach this goal by practicing the tips below and sharing this information with co-workers.
What Is UCSF Doing Currently:
There are three categories of carbon emissions and we are tackling them all. Scope 1 emissions can be addressed by reducing use of natural gas, fuel, refrigerants, and anesthesia gases. We have reduced our use of high emission anesthesia gases, transitioning to low emission refrigerants, and switching to electric or hybrid fleet vehicles. Scope 2 emissions can be addressed by purchasing 100% clean electricity and we are 98% of the way there. Scope 3 emissions is from our commute and business travel where we work to make it easier to take alternative transportation and reduce air travel.
Major Decarbonization Efforts:
UCSF is focusing much of our effort in finding an all-electric transition away from the Central Utility Plant located at the Parnassus Heights campus. We strive for all our new buildlings to be all-electric and have a low carbon footprint design. This began with the Mission Bay Tidelands Housing project and now includes the Mission Bay Surgery Center and Clinic and parking garage. At Parnassus, the focus is on an all-electric Parnassus Research Administration Building(PRAB) and the New Hospital at Parnassus Heights(NHPH).
What You Can Do at Home and Work:
- Compost absorbs carbon from the air: Learn about what can be composted at UCSF.
- Buy Energy Star: Energy Star is now UCSF policy. Help choose Energy Star appliances or equipments for your next purchase!
- Choose an electric vehicle: Find incentives or rebates towards your next new or used electric vehicle purchase.
- Try alternative transportation: Campus Life Services is here to help you make your commute easier.
