Special materials are items that cannot be disposed of in the compost, recycle, or garbage bins. These materials require special handling to be properly recycled.
The following are considered special materials:
- Batteries (informational flyer)
- Eyeglasses
- Ink & toner cartridges (informational flyer)
- CFL lightbulbs
- Metals (Scrap metal)
- Electronic waste
- Cell phones
- Cables
- Any devices with a power source or plug attached

The annual recovery of special materials at UCSF includes:
- 100 tons of scrap metal
- 11 tons of donated materials
- 4 tons of batteries
- 68 tons of e-waste
- 2 tons of toner cartridges
- 8 tons of fluorescent light bulb tubes
