Finding child care that’s compatible with your family’s needs can be a challenging and time-consuming process. Options include licensed centers, licensed family child care homes and license-exempt caregivers such as nannies. Whether each type of care is suitable for your family might depend on a combination of factors such as your budget, child’s age, preferred areas and care schedule.
The resources listed in the section below can support families as they research options. UCSF's four child care centers collectively serve children 2 months to 5 years old. If you're interested in hiring a nanny or a sitter, turn to our Sitters, Back-up Care and Other Home Help page and also check out the UCSF Child Care Bulletin Board. We've also included a link to the San Francisco Department of Early Childhood, which offers subsidies that help the city's families pay for child care. Please note the subsidies have income requirements and, because of high demand, eligibility does not guarantee assistance. If you live in other California cities, please refer to your local child care resource and referral agency for information on child care subsidies in your area.
