This energy saving project consisted of improving pipe insulation at the UCSF Parnassus utility plant in the Parnassus campus in San Francisco, CA. UCSF partnered with Thermaxx to install insulation jackets on the pipes of the plant in order to reduce heat loss.
Background
The Parnassus utility plant is an energy co-generation plant that provides natural gas and electricity to the buildings on the Parnassus campus. Previously, the pipes at the utility plant were experiencing heat loss, which translates to energy loss and the opportunity to improve the efficiency. Thermaxx insulation jackets use aerogel insulation and silicone coated fiberglass to insulate the pipes. This is a low-cost way to reduce emissions by limiting excess heat loss.
Results
This installation resulted in significant energy savings totaled to 30,971 therms between the two plants which equates to a savings of 163.83 metric tons of CO2 emissions saved, which is approximately $11,199.
