The UCSF Facilities Project team is excited to share the completion of the Byers Hall Inclusive Restroom Project—an achievement that highlights UCSF's commitment to fostering environments of inclusivity and accessibility. Located on the third floor of Byers Hall at UCSF's Mission Bay Campus (where Byers and Genentech Halls meet), this project is a shining example of what we can accomplish together.
The UCSF Facilities Project team took on the challenge of designing a safe, welcoming restroom facility for researchers and occupants. Inspired by the natural beauty of the San Francisco Bay Area salt ponds, palm trees and spruce—the design features a tranquil, greenery-themed space.

The space also incorporates the latest in hygiene and accessibility standards, including:
- Enhanced lighting for a brighter, more welcoming ambiance.
- Hands-free fixtures like a faucet and hand dryer, along with a hand sanitizer dispenser.
- An automatic door operator to ensure ease of access for all users, including those with limited mobility.
- High-quality glazed tiles, mirrors, and thoughtfully designed light fixtures that reflect UCSF's dedication to creating respectful, inclusive spaces.
The team’s goal was to create a space that goes beyond functionality to support privacy, accessibility and comfort for everyone in our community.
This inclusive restroom is now open for use, and we hope it sets a benchmark for future projects at UCSF.

This accomplishment was made possible by the vision and leadership of the "Inclusive Facilities Committee," sponsored by Associate Vice-Chancellor of Campus Life Services, Jon Giacomi and FAS Executive Director of Diversity & Inclusion Klint Jaramillo-Hudson, and driven by an exceptional team of collaborators. Their hard work and dedication have transformed this vision into reality.
The committee, now chaired by CLS Executive Director of Programs & Services Pam Su, takes feedback on the need for inclusive facilities across campus. View locations of Inclusive Restrooms at UCSF.
