Building Temperature Savings Program
As part of the Layer Up for Science program, we’re expanding building temperature ranges to allow for greater energy efficiency, while still keeping spaces comfortable. Your flexibility in adapting to this change supports creating energy savings, protecting research, helping UCSF meet its climate goals, and continuing advancing health worldwide in a changing climate.
What’s Changing
To support UC sustainability goals and help meet campus budget challenges, we’re launching this program a few buildings at a time. We’ll notify you in advance when your building is scheduled for the following updates:
- Building temperature ranges will be adjusted to a wider but still comfortable range
- During times of peak energy demand when costs are higher, temperature ranges may be expanded further.
UCSF Health and other critical spaces will not be affected by this change. Our team will identify these spaces before the program begins in each building.
Existing schedule (orange line) compared to the new schedule (green line) by hour.
You Make the Difference
These changes are a team effort, and they work best when we all take part. Here’s how your participation will benefit the campus:
- Save Energy: HVAC systems run more efficiently when maintaining a range instead of constantly reaching a precise temperature.
- Lower Costs: Less energy used means more money saved, helping us face budget constraints without compromising critical work and continuing to support research at UCSF.
- Reduce Emissions: Every degree of change supports UC’s carbon neutrality goals and reduces our campus footprint.
- Maintain Comfort: Research shows most people stay comfortable within a slightly wider range.
Adjusted building temperature ranges will increase energy savings.
How Our Facilities Team Will Support You
By working together, we can create a campus that’s more resilient, efficient, and environmentally responsible. We invite you to share your feedback on comfort levels so we can make thoughtful adjustments and reach out with concerns or special needs at campusenergy@ucsf.edu.
Aligned with UC Policy
The Layer Up for Science program supports the University of California’s Sustainable Practices Policy and UCSF’s Energy Conservation and Management Program (Policy 600-12). These changes reflect our commitment to responsible energy use, environmental stewardship, and long-term operational resilience.
