TEF Design is working with UCSF to reimagine the lobby of the Helen Diller Family Cancer Research Building at UCSF Mission Bay.
The renovation focuses on updating key gathering areas to better reflect the pioneering research within the building and to support the well-being of its occupants. Outdated finishes, millwork, and fixtures are being replaced with new partitions, upgraded lighting and electrical systems, and durable, high-performance materials. These interventions transform the lobby into a space that balances durability with warmth, offering opportunities for connection and collaboration while also providing moments of calm and respite.
Guided by principles of biophilia, the design integrates preserved moss walls, wood acoustic treatments, and a nature-inspired palette of finishes and furnishings to strengthen the connection to the natural environment. Together, these improvements align the building’s shared spaces with UCSF's mission of innovation and care, enriching user experience and long-term use.

Glass Pattern - A Tribute to Ecological History

Cheng+Snyder Studio partnered with UCSF to create unique, ecologically inspired glass patterns.
"Before its 20th-century transformation, Mission Bay in San Francisco was a shallow bay with wide marshes that supported a rich marine ecosystem. These wetlands were home to distinctive plants such as large-flowered dogwood, buckbean, bog orchids, and cotton grass. The glass pattern pays tribute to this ecological history, casting light and shadow through abstracted images of the site’s flora. Its ambiguity—suggesting plant life, cellular structures, or even clouds—links the site’s past with its present role as a center of scientific research. The color palette, with subtle variations, reinforces this connection while supporting the biophilic goals of the interior renovation, making the space both animated and welcoming." - Cheng+Snyder
