Energy Use Intensity (EUI) - EUI measures the energy used per square foot per year of a building. UC San Francisco reduced its annual EUI by approximately three percent from 2020 to 2021, and is currently exceeding the target set for 2025. UC policy states that each campus must reduce each location's energy use intensity by an average of at least two percent annually.

Strategic Energy Partnership (SEP) - The SEP program is a partnership between UC/CSU campuses and investor-owned utilities (IOUs) which provides increased utility incentives for energy and water conservation projects. SEP is also a source of bond funding loans which are repaid through UCSF’s Purchased Utilities budget. Examples of typical SEP projects include:
- Retrofit of HVAC systems
- Lighting retrofits
- Retrofits of building controls
- Normalized Metered Energy Consumption (NMEC)
- Smart Labs Incentive Program
Ultra-Low Temperature Freezer Rebate Program - Under the rebate program, participants receive $4,500 if they decommission an old, energy-inefficient freezer and replace it with a new, ENERGY STAR model. The program is a partnership between the Energy Management Team and the Office of Sustainability.
