UCSF Transportation has taken a major step in improving transit services by introducing new shuttle buses to its fleet.
The department recently received a brand-new 35-foot electric bus, an upgrade from the 30-foot models used since 2017. This larger vehicle can accommodate 10 more passengers, addressing high ridership demands.
“We don't want to leave anyone behind, and so a larger bus is going to give us that opportunity,” shared Erik Zandhuis, Director of Transit.

The new 35-foot bus is initially expected to operate on the Red Shuttle line, which runs from Fourth Street to 16th and Mission streets.
In addition to the electric bus, UCSF Transportation has acquired nine new 30-passenger Ford shuttles. The new Fords will replace older, smaller Starcraft models that seat only 24 passengers. The additional seating capacity will significantly improve service, especially for riders coming from BART and other public transit connections.
Once operational, the 30-passenger Fords will primarily serve the Blue, Gold, and Grey routes, where smaller vehicles currently run.
To ensure both passenger and driver safety, all UCSF shuttle drivers are provided with vehicle orientation training.
"Most of our drivers are already experienced with larger vehicles, but we provide hands-on training for each new model," Zandhuis added. "They are all commercially licensed and hold a passenger endorsement, this ensures a smooth and reliable ride."

Beyond increasing capacity, the new shuttles will enhance the overall reliability of Transportation’s services. As newer model vehicles are on the road, riders can expect fewer interruptions of service and a more dependable shuttle service for their commute.
New buses bring new energy," Zandhuis said. "Just like getting a new car, there’s excitement—and yes, even that new bus smell.
UCSF Transportation continues to express gratitude for its riders, recognizing their valuable feedback in shaping a more efficient transit system.
"We appreciate our passengers’ input and are committed to making continuous improvements,” expressed Zandhuis.
With these upgrades, UCSF’s shuttle services are poised to provide a more comfortable and reliable experience for the entire UCSF community.
