Commuting to UCSF just got easier! The Transportation team is now offering Commute Concierge consultations, where UCSF staff, faculty, or students can meet with a Transportation representative to explore alternatives to solo driving.
“It’s designed to help people find solutions that fit their lifestyle, save time and money, and reduce their environmental impact,” explained Transportation Specialist Natasha Timmons.
The program, which launched recently, is already making an impact.
“We’ve had a handful of people reach out,” Timmons shared. “It’s been great to connect with people and ease their commute challenges.”
Assistant Director of Customer Service Vicki Sundstrom shared a story from a recent Commute Concierge participant who discovered new commuting options during their consultation.
“The person I spoke with was knowledgeable about the available options but was surprised by some suggestions—like taking the ferry to avoid traffic. While it didn’t fit their early-morning schedule, they were grateful to learn about alternatives they hadn’t considered before,” she said.
How It Works
UCSF staff, faculty, and students can fill out the online form, if interested in scheduling a consultation. The form asks for details, such as the location from which they are commuting and the commute options to which they are open.
The Transportation team will create personalized recommendations and share them during a 15-minute virtual meeting, phone call, or email consultation.
“One of the benefits of living in the Bay Area is having so many transportation choices,” said Tyler Dewey, Transportation Demand Manager. “It might be a little overwhelming to figure that out on your own. If you can work with someone who knows the system well, you can get more tailored, actionable advice to find that best commute available.”
Flexible Solutions
UCSF offers a variety of transportation solutions to fit different lifestyles and budgets. These include:
- Public transit planning
- Park & Ride
- UCSF shuttle and on-demand services
- Mission Bay transit
- Vanpool and carpool programs
- Bike-sharing, e-bike discounts, and cycling routes
The Commute Concierge service doesn’t lock the participant into one approach. Instead, the recommendations offer flexible options to fit changing schedules.
“Some people might choose a vanpool five days a week, while others might take public transit a few days and drive the rest. The goal is to give them tools to make the choice that’s best for them,” Dewey said.
Why It Matters
The service’s goal is to offer more than convenience. Participants often find that alternative commutes are more reliable, cost-effective, and eco-friendly.
