Dear Uber Commute Shuttle,
I really wasn’t sure we’d work out together.
I’ll admit — when I first heard about you, I was excited. You seemed like a safe alternative and a nice break from my daily drive into the city. However, I still had doubts. Would the timing work? Would I feel stuck? Would I miss the control of having my own car?
I’m happy to report: I was wrong.
From day one, you made my life easier. You pick me up in Fremont at 6:45 a.m. sharp, and I climb aboard in my usual energetic state. I greet the driver by name (and he greets me right back, which I love) before heading to my favorite seat: third row, right side, window. I didn’t expect to become a creature of habit.
Once I’m settled, the shift happens. I might open my laptop to send out a few emails. Whereas on other days, I put on music and mentally rehearse a dance routine I learned at the dance studio. But usually, within ten minutes, I’m asleep.
Passenger Princess: FULLY ACTIVATED.
Let's be real—you’ve saved me a lot more than stress. Before you, the cost of my commute included gas, tolls, and parking. That adds up really fast! Now? You get me there and back for a fraction of the cost. More peace and more money in my pocket? I call that a win-win.
What I didn't expect was for you to also become my pause button. My permission to not be in control. When I was driving myself every day, I was always so tense and impatient. Every minute of traffic felt like a personal attack. Nowadays, I sit back and surrender. And guess what? We cruise through the HOV lane and fly across the Bay Bridge like it’s nothing. It’s honestly magical.
There’s even a little sense of community on board. Like the guy who gets picked up before me. He’s always knocked out with his jacket hood up and earbuds in. Recently, he upgraded to a neck pillow. Honestly? How genius! I might start bringing one too.
It’s the little things I’ve grown to love. The routine. The rest. The way you’ve taught me to let go of what I can’t control, like Giants game traffic or unexpected delays, and just be okay with it. That’s been a surprisingly powerful lesson, not just for my commute, but for life.
Uber Commute Shuttle, thank you. Thank you for giving me back two and a half hours of peace each day. Thank you for helping me sneak in more rest. Thank you for making me feel safe, seen, and slightly less motion sick now that I’ve got my anti-nausea wristbands.
You’ve made my mornings smoother, my evenings chiller, and my life 10% more together.
I didn’t think I’d fall in love with a commute, but here we are.
With love,
Amanda Aguilar
