The UCSF Office of Sustainability has put forward an updated Green Event Planner Guide and seeks to recognize UCSF staff implementing zero waste and sustainable practices at UCSF events and meetings. This self-guided checklist awards points towards certification for individuals who commit to offering sustainability features at their events.
Participants who complete the check list are eligible for a certificate of platinum, gold, silver and bronze, in addition to the bragging rights of helping to reduce UCSF's carbon footprint.
Here are a few tips to consider when planning your event this holiday season:
1. Ditch the plastic utensils
Replace single-use plastic with reusable or locally compostable alternatives. Switching from single-use plastic utensils to reusables or locally compostable options reduces our reliance on fossil fuels, as even recyclable plastics are derived from non-renewable resources. All 10 UC campuses are aligning with UCOP’s commitment to eliminate single-use utensils, supporting more sustainable practices across the system
2. Skip the single-serve & boxed lunches
Reduce waste by opting to buy in bulk, and serve food "family style", rather than in individually wrapped plastics or boxes. If food does need to be wrapped, use compostable boxes rather than plastics.
3. Introduce yourself with a reusable name tag
The days of relying on plastic stickers are long gone - make a new friend with seed paper name tags, sure to start conversation (and a garden)! If it's an internal UCSF event, ditch the nametags entirely and wear your ID badge.
4. Spread love, not waste
When considering presents for your guests, opt for gifts and giveaways that are sustainable, i.e. re-usable water bottles, UCSF Bear Hugs, healthy snacks, plants, etc.
5. Introduce a "Low-Carbon Diet"
Prioritizing plant based vegan and vegetarian options not only supports a wide range of dietary preferences, but also helps reduce your event's overall carbon footprint.
