Amelia Jarolim is one of the recent Zero Waste Fellows to join UCSF's Health Sustainability team.
Jarolim graduated from UC Berkeley in the Spring with a degree in Conservation and Resource
Studies. She will be participating in AmeriCorps as a Zero Waste Fellow for UCSF for the next 11
months.
She grew up in Pasadena, California, where she spent most of her time running for her
high school track and cross country teams, studying, and spending time outdoors. However, her love for environmental science, conservation, and sustainability began after going to college
and learning about ecology and natural resource management. She strives to lead as a steward
for environmental protection through zero-waste efforts.
After all, she says, conservation efforts first and foremost require clean and safe habitats!
What led her to pursue a career in sustainability?
In college, Jarolim studied conservation with a focus on wildlife ecology and biology. However, after an 8-month-long internship at San Francisco International Airport (SFO), she was introduced to
the field of sustainability.
While her passions initially lay elsewhere, she started gaining experience in conducting waste audits, researching new zero waste passion projects, and brainstorming new ways to change consumer behaviors to a more sustainable way.
As time went on, Jarolim realized zero waste had become a field she was passionate about and enjoyed doing.
Today, she is excited to join the team and work with other passionate individuals about sustainability, while working to make the world a cleaner and healthier place for all communities.
What is Jarolim looking forward to the most?
She is most excited to put what she has learned into action by conducting waste audits and site
visits!
In addition, she is excited to learn more about the different hospitals and their communities, and hopefully make a difference in people’s lives. She is also excited to meet and work with all the other members on the team.
