For nearly two decades, Peasant Pies has been a comforting presence across UCSF campuses — serving warm, handmade savory and sweet pies to students, faculty, staff, and more since 2008. Now, the bakery has earned an honor that celebrates its place in the city’s heart: official recognition as a San Francisco Legacy Business.
San Francisco’s Legacy Business Program honors small, independent businesses that have operated for 30 years or more and have made a lasting contribution to the city’s cultural identity.
Founded in San Francisco’s Noe Valley neighborhood in 1993, Peasant Pies has always stood for wholesome, flavorful, and accessible comfort food. When UCSF’s Mission Bay campus began to take shape, the bakery became one of the first local eateries to open it’s doors and has been a staple for 17 years. It quickly became a go to destination for the campus community.
From breakfast pies to classic chicken pot pies, the shop has nourished countless students, residents, and researchers, and has become a familiar stop to fuel up.
“Peasant Pies is my go-to place for lunch,” said Simran S., a master’s student in Clinical and Epidemiological Research. She said this as she sat across from her colleague Raviola M. They regularly come here as part of their routine on campus.

“I love the garbanzo pie most. The atmosphere is nice and cozy. I’ve been coming here for a year and a half, and I really love the service — it’s quick and they’re always so friendly. If you sit down, they bring your food right to you.”
Raviola noted that the owner’s hands on approach stands out.
“I’ve noticed that when the owner is around, he’ll say hi and help the other workers. You can tell they care,” she. “And I love their mocha!”
For many in the UCSF community, Peasant Pies is a reliable, friendly place that feels both personal and part of something bigger.
The new recognition not only honors Peasant Pies’ decades of service but also supports its long term sustainability through city programs that help legacy businesses thrive. For UCSF, it’s also a celebration of strong community partnerships, and the roots that make campus space more connected, and grounded in the city’s identity.
Congratulations to Peasant Pies on becoming a San Francisco Legacy Business.
