Greg Whisman (shown above), assistant director at UCSF Fitness & Recreation, is no stranger to Carmelina’s Taqueria in the Millberry Union food court.
“I started eating at Carmelina’s when they first opened 20 years ago,” Whisman said. “They have been a staple of life on the Parnassus campus for a long time now.”
It’s only fitting, then, that Whisman’s loyalty to the taqueria was rewarded with free lunch for three months as part of a raffle drawing held to celebrate Carmelina’s 20th anniversary. “You know what they say…winner, winner, chicken (taco) dinner,” Whisman said.
Karim Salgado, owner of Carmelina’s, said it was nice to have a regular customer win the grand prize at the celebration. “Having Greg win this is really nice,” she said. “He was one of our first customers 20 years ago. It makes it that much better knowing one of our customers from day one won the raffle.”
Whisman said he tries to eat at the taqueria at least once a week. “Winning this prize will help open those opportunities up a lot!”
Whisman said he enjoys the breakfasts and the Taco Contento with black beans and grilled chicken. “What I like best about the taqueria is the great food and the friendly staff. With so many large fast-food places around, it’s nice to have a family-owned business like Carmelina’s. You really get the feeling it’s family run by how the staff interacts with each other and their customers.”
