Aldea San Miguel Safety Improvements
At Housing Services, we’re always looking for ways to make our communities safe and welcoming, and recently we completed some targeted safety improvements at Aldea San Miguel.
One key upgrade is the installation of new security cameras at the Aldea Center at 155 Johnstone Drive. Funded through a $15,000 grant from the University of California’s Be Smart About Safety Program, these cameras are monitored by UC Police. We hope this added surveillance will help deter incidents such as vehicle break-ins and bike thefts, while providing a more secure environment for everyone in the community.
Laura Eisenberg, our Customer Services Manager, coordinates safety and security programs for Housing Services, and works closely with our residents. “Our residents have expressed a strong desire for enhanced safety measures within our community,” said Laura. “These cameras provide an additional layer of visibility.”
Laura is also Housing Services’ liaison to the UC Police Department and has been working with UCPD officers to increase their rounds in the community. Given Aldea’s location on Mount Sutro, Laura noted “It can feel a bit spooky at night in the woods, especially when the fog rolls in. The officers’ presence has been beneficial in preventing crime and is reassuring to the residents.”
Jason Heil, crime analyst for the UC Police Department, noted the drop in crimes since the COVID-19 pandemic hit 2020-21. In the following three years (2022-24), Aldea San Miguel’s crime rate declined 30.9%.
In addition to the camera installation, another safety improvement is scheduled for later this year: the resurfacing of sidewalks and parking lots throughout Aldea. This project will not only improve pedestrian and vehicular safety but will also widen roadways to enhance Fire Department access in the event of an emergency.
Together these enhancements reflect our ongoing commitment to fostering a safe, responsive, and well-maintained living environment for all Aldea residents.
