Achieving 90% Student Satisfaction: How Housing Services Creates a Positive Living Experience

All UCSF students were invited to respond to the Office of Student Life’s biannual Student Services Survey. The survey measured student satisfaction with the services under the Campus Life Services, Office of Diversity and Outreach, and Student Academic Affairs umbrellas. 
Our Housing Services team is thrilled to announce that we’ve achieved a 90% satisfaction rate, a 10% increase from the last survey conducted in 2022. This milestone reflects our commitment to providing an affordable, accessible, and engaging living environment for our residents. Here are some of the key highlights that make our housing options a favorable option for students.

Clean, Well-Maintained Facilities

One of the most frequently mentioned points of satisfaction among students is the cleanliness and upkeep of housing facilities. Many students highlighted the quick response time and efficient service of our maintenance team. One student noted, “Maintenance is always so friendly and provides efficient and quick services.” Another student echoed this sentiment, saying, “Housing Services has been prompt in responding to my maintenance requests and in repairing things when they break.”

Living in a well-maintained environment is essential for students to feel comfortable and safe. This feedback reaffirms Housing’s commitment to providing clean and well-cared-for facilities.

Building a Strong Sense of Community

The Housing Services team goes beyond providing housing; we’re dedicated to fostering a sense of community among residents. Through organized events and activities, we offer opportunities for students to connect with one another, make friends, and feel a part of something larger.

Students frequently mentioned their enjoyment of these events. One resident shared, “I love the small events—they make me not feel alone and feel part of the community.” Another noted, “Housing Services excels in fostering a sense of community through organized events. Shoutout to the event planner who does a great job!”

Our goal is to create a supportive environment where students feel welcome and engaged. Whether it’s a social gathering, a fitness class, or an informative workshop, these events are designed to enrich students’ lives and help them feel at home.

In the past 5 years, Housing Services has more than doubled the campus housing inventory.  With the addition of The Tidelands and Academe at 198, Housing Services is meeting student demand.  In fact, almost every student who applied in 2024 received a housing offer.

Providing Affordable and Accessible Housing Options

Housing affordability and accessibility are crucial factors for students. We are proud to offer housing that is both near campus and affordable, making it convenient for students to balance their studies, work, and social lives. One student commented, “Housing Services does well in providing affordable housing near campus and making the process of applying and paying rent straightforward.”

Balancing affordable rents with maintaining our properties is an important aspect of UCSF’s campus housing program. We’ve streamlined our processes to ensure that securing housing is simple and accessible for all students. From the initial application to the ongoing rental payments, we strive to make every step as straightforward as possible.

This year Housing Services was able to offer rents that are approximately 25% below the market rate for each student property. In addition, we’ve taken steps to reduce or eliminate added costs where feasible, such as not requiring fees such as an application fees, credit checks, or security deposits. Students have the option of choosing furnished or unfurnished units, based on their needs, and in shared housing situations, utilities are included. All these things together make for an easy, affordable move-in.
