Johana Garcia admits she is still learning the UCSF system. She’s only worked six months as the administrative analyst for the Assistant Vice Chancellor’s Office but she’s quickly learning the ropes.
“Everyone is highly supportive and they value teamwork,” she said. “Being six months in, I am continuing to learn the UCSF system, and my team has been helpful with this process.”
Facilities Services Associate Director, Sean Aloise, said the moment he met Garcia he knew she would be a hard worker. “She’s not afraid to ask questions or make decisions,” he said. “In her short time here, she has been a great team player and has been helpful not only to our immediate office, but the entire Facilities Services staff. Her work ethic is strong and determined, no matter the challenge.”
Garcia was born in Honduras and immigrated to the United States when she was seven-years-old. “Not speaking English was challenging when I first started school and it motivated me to study harder,” she said. “I attended Cesar Chavez Elementary School, Everett Middle School, and John O’Connell High School.”
Upon graduation, she enrolled at San Francisco State University. She admits the jump to university was challenging, even on the days when she felt most prepared. “I was navigating my way through higher education during the first two years, and once I got the hang of things, I earned a bachelor’s degree in business management.”
Unlike many immigrant college students, Garcia didn’t have to work until she graduated from SFSU. “I was very fortunate to have my parents support me,” she said. “I was also lucky enough to have received scholarships. This helped tremendously because I didn’t have to worry about working and attending school which led me to focus on my studies.”
Upon graduation, Garcia’s first job was at a non-profit organization that helped homeless families. “I was very gratefully for the opportunity and loved what the organization stood for,” she said. “I also worked at a law firm, which was my first business job. It helped me grow into my career and helped me build character as well. Before joining UCSF, I worked at a commercial real estate company and gained knowledge and experience. Due to Covid, my supervisor was let go and I took many of those responsibilities, which helped my career.”
Garcia’s day-to-day work responsibilities at UCSF are varied and include helping coordinate department events, complete vehicle claims, working on administrative procedures, and assisting Facilities staff who might require her help.
Outside of work, Garcia enjoys spending time with her family, whether at home, a park, or a restaurant. “Spending quality time with them is my favorite thing to do.”
