Mario Carmona, associate director of UCSF Documents and Media (DM), celebrates 30 years at UCSF. This milestone marks three decades of dedicated support to UCSF's mission, creating memories with colleagues, leading his team, sharing stories, and occasionally pulling innocent office pranks.
He serves as a living archive for UCSF and DM, with an endless knowledge of past events and facts, a knack for finding information, and a vast repository within DM’s walls. As the unofficial custodian of print treasures, he has file cabinets filled with UCSF Newsbreak, a printed newspaper once delivered to every UCSF employee, going back to the 90s; a case with branded knick-knacks, including an unofficial UCSF seal; and a hefty stack of metal printing plates which used to be used for most University business, from badge request to prescription pads.
What His Colleagues Have to Say
Lisa and Mario and various events.
Lisa Gee, who retired from DM twice, says, "I have known Mario for the past 30 years. We didn’t work as much together, but for the last 25 years, we have been able to read each other’s minds. “SCARY”! We spend a lot of time going to conferences, classes, and, of course, parties. I can tell you that Mario is one of the best bosses I have had. Congratulations, Mario, on your 30th year of service and a few more. UCSF is lucky to have you as one of the team members."

"Congratulations to UCSF for hiring Mario! And kudos to Mario for being a rock star leader for all these years. His positive outlook is infectious, and it has been an honor working with him. One of my favorite Mario moments was reading “It’s a Family Affair,” in a One Good Thing issue. What a delight to know the entire Carmona family is working at UCSF – who wouldn’t be happy looking at those smiles?"

Mario—Reminds me of the old Mario Bros arcade game. Mario likes 80’s arcade games which I always played 80’s arcade games when I was young. Very fun when they first came out.

"One thing I admire about Mario is that he’s not afraid to get his hands dirty. He helps with moves and heavy lifting while telling you a good story at the same time. "

“An outstanding leader is someone who inspires and motivates others to achieve a common goal. An outstanding leader also fosters a positive environment, encourages collaboration, and is open to feedback, creating trust and respect among the team. Ultimately, they lead by example:” Thank you, Mario, for being an outstanding leader. Congratulations on 30 years at UCSF!"
