Dear CLS Colleagues,
I am honored to accept the position of Associate Vice Chancellor for Campus Life Services. Campus Life Services represents the best of UCSF and I am looking forward to working with each of you to continue our excellent services and programs.
I have been with CLS since 2008 when Facilities Services and the FAS Finance Service Center were integrated into CLS, so I know many of you, but for those I do not know, I look forward to meeting you over the coming weeks to learn more about your accomplishments and opportunity areas. As you know, CLS faces many challenges that were brought on by the changes in our work environment due to COVID-19, and we will need to assess those impacts, consult the UCSF enterprise (Campus and Health), and plot a course forward for each CLS service line. I look forward to involving everyone in that effort.
Additionally, I look forward to making some organizational decisions and department head hires over the coming months, setting up an innovative and steady leadership team, and then starting a CLS-wide strategic planning process that will guide us through the next several years.
If I had to use a few sentences to describe my leadership style:
- I value the frontline staff that dedicate their work lives to UCSF
- I value diversity and inclusion as a common and natural way of managing
- I like to build consensus among teams and leaders
- I prefer group decision-making but am not afraid to make tough decisions when necessary
- I like to set clear goals and direction and let departments meet those aims
- I have a strong disposition for responsiveness – getting back to customers, solving problems, and anticipating customer needs
- I like innovative practices and trying new solutions to issues
- I like to be honest about what’s going well and what is not
Most importantly, I want people to be happy and engaged in their work. I value teamwork and I look forward to building even more teamwork within our ranks.
There will be plenty of time to explore your style, vision, and goals for CLS and the new leadership style I plan to bring to our organization. I am going to need your help in discovering a framework that describes who we are and what we plan to be in the post-COVID environment. In the meantime, let’s get to know one another and start this mutual dialogue.
I respect what you do, and I look forward to helping us all be successful in our common aim of Making Life Better Here at UCSF.
Sincerely,
Jon
