UC San Francisco is pleased to announce the appointment of Joanna Trammell (she/her) as the new Chief Operating Officer (COO) and Executive Director of Campus Life Services (CLS). Joanna brings a wealth of experience and a solid command in the areas of finance, HR, shared services, policy and procedure, process improvement, diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility and anti-racism (DEIA-AR), and engagement to this important role.
In this new position, Trammell will be a strategic partner to the Office of the Associate Vice Chancellor within CLS, overseeing all administrative, finance, communications, and human resources areas of the department. Her leadership will be instrumental in ensuring the efficient and effective delivery of shared services while enhancing employee engagement and satisfaction.
Trammell has served in the University of California system for nearly 19 years in various capacities, including Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) of the Cardiovascular Research Institute at UCSF, CAO in Pharmaceutical Chemistry at UCSF, Program Manager of Operations, Culture, Engagement, and Diversity at the University of California Office of the President (UCOP), and Business and Financial Services Manager for Campus Shared Services at UC Berkeley.
During her tenure, Trammell has streamlined processes, reduced redundancies, and spearheaded initiatives to boost employee engagement and celebrate diversity. She has consistently demonstrated her adeptness in managing people and enhancing organizational culture. For instance, Trammell improved the Gallup staff survey score in the Pharmaceutical Chemistry department from 3.40 to 4.45 by focusing on recognition, career development, transparency, and soliciting feedback. She also spearheaded engagement and diversity groups that launched several initiatives, including a diversity speaker series, gratitude grams, and events designed to boost employee engagement and celebrate diversity.
"We are excited to welcome Trammell to the team as our new Chief Operating Officer in Campus Life Services,” said Jon Giacomi, Associate Vice Chancellor of CLS. “With Joanna’s proven track record of success in people organization and development, we are confident that she will help us enhance the culture of Campus Life Services and the services we provide to the UCSF community.”
“I am thrilled about the opportunity to join CLS and inspired daily by the significant impact it has on UCSF and our broader community," said Trammell. "I deeply value and align with Financial and Administrative Services (FAS) 'True North' framework, particularly its first pillar, which emphasizes the importance of 'Our People.' I am eager to contribute to the ongoing transformation, building on the solid foundation already established, and exploring new avenues to enhance our team’s accomplishments for the benefit of UCSF and the wider community.”
Trammell describes her leadership style as "grounded in leading by example with transparency and integrity." Embracing the CLS culture, she states, "I pledge to listen attentively and actively seek feedback to ensure our decisions are well-informed and inclusive. I am dedicated to fairness and balance in all interactions and will openly acknowledge my mistakes. I am eager to get to know each of you personally. My goal is to enhance CLS’s already robust culture by fostering an environment of inclusion and belonging, where every voice is heard and valued."
