In the fall of 1996, a modest tradition was founded by a few dedicated staff members: Grubsgiving. Among the founders was Verndean Tortorelli, a UCSF Health Communications Specialist, who worked in Programs and Services.
"[Grubsgiving was] an inclusive celebration and community family feel – especially great for those who might not be getting together with family for the holiday and a way to celebrate with our work family," Tortorelli said.
Cesar Sanchez, Assistant Vice Chancellor of Facilities Services, Director of Communications, Sean Aloise, COO & Executive Director of Campus Life Services, Joanna Trammel, and Interim Director of People and Culture, Shauna Strong hosted this year's event.
The first Grubsgiving welcomed an eclectic assortment of 'grub', including Spam, Funions, McDonald's, and KFC, brought by the Grubsgiving co-founder, Red Mangio. Digital Experience Strategist Suzie Kirrane brought back beautiful New England fall leaves to add to the décor.

Over the years, the tradition expanded to incorporate more staff across two locations and offer a monetary donation option for those who were unable to bring food items. Grubsgiving became a cherished tradition and a space for staff to share gratitude. When Red Mangio passed away in 2006, his memory lived on in a "Simply Divine Award" given out each Grubsgiving in his honor.
The tradition went dormant for several years, until this November, when the CLS Operations team revived it with a new Grubsgiving celebration. While there were no Funions or KFC, the original spirit of the celebration was present in the joy and food that were shared. Among the guests of honor were Tortorelli and Kirrane, as well as Greg Whisman, assistant director at UCSF Fitness & Recreation, who spoke about the inaugural Grubsgiving and Mangio's legacy.
"It was heartwarming to see and hear the buzz as the community event approached. Although I am now in Women's Health, I was honored to be invited back and join in this important community builder." Tortorelli said.

Now that Grubsgiving has been reinvigorated with new cheer, there is hope that the tradition will carry on for many years.
